Paul and Vale enjoy breakfast in the open air
The Plot
After spending two romantic weeks in Rome with Paul, Valerie Phillips suggests he join her on safari with her father in Kenya. Industrialist Cal Phillips. Valerie has another potential suitor in the hunting party, namely a young executive with Phillips' firm, Neil Scofield, who is meeting Valerie for the first time, and has her father's seal of approval.
Paul thinks that Neil might be very suitable for her, and volunteers to leave the safari, but she asks him to stay.
Phillips agressively tells Paul to leave
Though he was welcoming at first, Cal Phillips rudely tells Paul on the second day that he doesn't like him, and wants him to leave the camp.
He's afraid that Paul wants to marry his daughter, and says he'll do everything to prevent this, being disgusted with the way Paul lives.
Paul tells him that he'll go if Valerie wants him to, and that he intends to remain single, being quite confident that she is not in love with him.
Paul saves Phillips' life
When Paul has a chat with the approved suitor, it turns out that Neil himself has been thinking of adopting a lifestyle similar to Paul's for a while .
While their conversation is taking place, Cal Phillips is bitten by a dangerous mosquito, meaning that he'll only be able to hobble around for the next few days. However, he does go out without his gun the following day, and is almost gored by a lion, were it not for Paul's quick intervention. Though he is only photographing others' prey on this safari, Paul is forced to kill the animal to prevent Phillips' death.

Valerie announces that she's fallen in love with Paul
His life saved, Phillips is now pleased that Paul didn't obey his command to leave.
He is therefore in a more receptive mood when his daughter tells him that she has just fallen in love with Paul, even though they had a more casual relationship in Rome. Her father responds by saying that Valerie should marry him, and thinks Paul has too much character to be the playboy parasite he appears to be. Phillips, now eager to assist Valerie in her conquest of Paul, says he usually attracts the executives he wants by appealing to their goals and ambitions, but Paul doesn't seem to have any.
Neil says that Valerie is after Paul
At the same time, Neil is asking Paul about his plans and interest in Valerie, and learns that they will be parting company when the safari is over. But Neil is convinced that that Valerie is head over heels in love with Paul.
When the group return to the safari club, one of the first voices Paul hears is the man he was trying to avoid, Alex Ryder, an unpleasant fellow who is fiancé of Molly Pierce, sister of Paul's own former fiancée.

Alex says there's no money in the law
Alex is pleased to be able to meet Cal Phillips, and when alone with Paul, tells him that there's no money in the law.
He adds that he's here with Jack Reinhardt, trying to get him to invest in some California lake real estate, and asks if Paul doesn't mind his bringing the property deal to Phillips.
Paul encourages him, but when Alex - who knows about Paul's terminal illness - inquires about his health, Paul responds by asking how Molly is.
Phillips quizzes Alex about Paul
That evening, as Paul and Valerie dance, Alex tries to push his lake property on Cal Phillips, who shows mild interest, but quickly changes the subject to the question of why Paul left his law practice.
Valerie asks Paul about his plans for Christmas in Rome, and remarks how beautiful that will be.
Knowing that she's expected to be with her family in Detroit for the holidays, he says, “I wish you could be with me,” and Valerie takes that as an invitation, and accepts on the spot.
While dancing Valerie gets herself invited to Rome
Paul is a bit taken aback, but when Valerie asks if he's pleased, he offers a gentlemanly “of course” in reply.
The next day Phillips tells Alex flatly that he doesn't want to get into the lakeside real estate, but does want to know why Paul abandoned his law practice, adding that he thinks Alex knows. Alex confirms this, but declares a wish to protect the privacy of his “dear friend.”
Phillips insists that he wants to know only in the interest of his daughter's happiness, and offers Alex $10,000 for the information.

Cal Phillips tells Valerie that Paul is dying
Later, while she is packing for her visit to Rome, Phillips visits Valerie's room and tells her that Paul is dying, but she mustn't reveal to him that she knows. He tells her to go to Paul immediately, and advise him that she can't make the Christmas trip.
Valerie goes to Paul's hotel, and says that she trapped him into inviting her to Rome, and that they both knew it. He admits that she's right, but says that some traps are very pleasant. But Valerie wants to know what will be after Christmas, and he tells her that he has a fishing date in Mexico at New Year.
Valerie offers herself without conditions
Valerie tells him that if he ever wants her, or needs her, or just wants to think about it, whatever it is, she'll go along.
Paul responds that he doesn't love her - but could - and he can't let that happen. She asks him why, but he replies that he can't tell her, and that it isn't the end of life, but probably the beginning for her.
When she says that her father insisted that she spend Christmas with the family, and she won't be going to Rome with him, Paul kisses her goodbye.

Paul tells Neil the way he lives is a lousy life
Neil arrives at the airport just before Paul's flight boards, and tells him that he thinks he's in love with Valerie, who'll be flying home with her father and him tomorrow. What he wants to know is whether he'll be travelling with a girl who has a broken heart. Paul says that he doesn't know, but advises Neil to play it cool, and he and Valerie could have a good life together. Neil says Paul wasn't much help, but he's glad that he came to say goodbye and wish Paul good luck, wherever he might be. Then he says that he's still tempted to hit the road the way Paul does. “Don't be,” Paul responds. “It's a lousy life.”

Notes & Comments: Extremely disappointing to see Marianna Hill - who was so dazzling in Sequestro - give such a wooden performance, but the script may well have broken everyone's spirit.
Most especially the scene where the father says his daughter must be wondering why Paul hasn't asked her to marry him yet. After knowing each other only two weeks? And telling her that she can't take the “drastic” step of accompanying him to Rome ….. when the couple just came from there.
The dialogue reeks of the worst soap opera - so utterly foolish and melodramatic when drama is what people expect from this series.
