Diana shows off her necklace at dinner
The Plot:
Paul has arrived at an elegant Mexican resort where he's expecting to meet his friend, gigolo Ramon de Vega for a fishing trip. As he's arranging a plane to take them to Puerto Seguara, Diana Murrow interrupts, and ask the desk clerk whether her tiger has been delivered yet. Paul is clearly amused, and finds Diana next to him at the pool later. She flaunts her wealth, but says she also has a regular job, working for a magazine. They have dinner together, and Diana is wearing a very expensive-looking diamond necklace which she draws attention to.

Paul points out that their directory is out of date
The next day, at a quiet location, Paul encounters Diana's maid, reading very intellectual books. When he arrives at Diana's room to pick her up for dinner that evening, Paul discovers there a copy of Bradley Dennison Executive & Professional Directory.Having guessed that the girls were putting on an act, he points out that it's six months old, and he won't be in the next one - no longer a partner in an important law firm. Within the next two years he will have gone through all his money living the good life, and will be unemployed and penniless - “desirable but not very eligible.” Diana is outraged at the implication.

Diana feigns outrage at Paul's suggestions
But Paul insists that he doesn't want them to waste such a wonderful performance on a non-productive audience. He says it was almost perfect with only a few slip-ups, and asks when Louise would have the chance to wear the fancy necklace. Though Diana tries to keep up the pretence, Louise tells her to give up, that Paul has seen through them. But they say that they didn't just look him up in the book, they really like him, and Paul asks where they ever came up with this scheme. The girls are fed up with the odds and concepts - that single men are considered eligible, but women are just sex objects.

The girls explain their strategy to Paul
So, this year, they decided to take a very special vacation - two weeks in Mexico, two weeks in Bermuda - at posh places where they would merchandise themselves to meet a rich and single man.
Wearing the same size, they pooled their money on a fabulous wardrobe for the occasion, and bought a necklace only an expert with a lupe would recognize as fake.

Ramon serenades a starry-eyed Diana
Having agreed to be supportive, Paul is shocked when he comes downstairs the next evening to find his friend Ramon serenading Diana who has stars in her eyes.
Later, Louise tells Paul with delight how rich Ramon is. But rather than using a published business directory this time, their information has come from the hotel desk clerk.
Later Paul and Ramon have a warm reunion in Paul's room.Their plan was to go fishing, and Paul questions the fact that Ramon is engaging in romance on his vacation - something against his own rules.

Ramon declares Diana worth putting off his vacation
But Ramon says he couldn't possibly start his vacation now, that this woman is something extra special, and rhapsodizes on and on about Diana, not missing her expensive diamond necklace. Paul is about to reveal the truth, but sees that Ramon is determined, and even asking Paul to put off their fishing trip for a week.
Entertained by the prospect of the two fortune hunters taking on one another, Paul declares that the fishing can wait. When Ramon replies with consideration that he knows how much Paul enjoys the sport, Paul answers that he might enjoy this one more.

Diana and Ramon enjoy each other's company
The romance blossoms, and Ramon uses all his classic lines on Diana, she eating every one of them up.
But Louise has heard from a servant that Ramon is a gigolo, and confronts Paul, whom she's perceived to be a friend of Ramon's. Paul does not deny the truth, but says that Ramon can't do Diana any harm, and then begs Louise not to reveal anything, and let the romance end naturally. They agree to stay silent to their friends, and when Louise suggests shaking hands on the vow, Paul says that's what men do, and kisses her passionately.

Paul and Louise seal their bargain with a kiss
Diana meanwhile is head over heels, and tells Louise giddily that it's not her money Ramon is interested in, but her cooking and sewing that he's impressed with. Louise asks carefully if there might be something that Diana doesn't know about Ramon, and gets the reply that Diana intends to spend the rest of her life finding them out.
A somewhat tipsy Ramon, for his part, tells Paul that the constant game of courtship is wearying, and that something more permanent might be better - certainly if the woman was young and beautiful, charming and rich - like he believes Diana to be.

A tipsy Ramon talks about marrying Diana
Ramon goes on to praise Diana, already starting to think of having children with her. He says that he really has some land in Andorra, and a great old ten-room house. He even begins to raise his voice in excitement when considering what a large injection of money could do for him, and Paul must get him to lower his voice, for fear of the truth coming out. Paul then asks what Ramon would do if Diana were not rich, and what would she think when she finds he isn't. Ramon gives much the same answer the girls gave to this - that the deceived partner would just be pleased to have a magnificent spouse.

Paul listens in horror at Ramon's plans
Paul and Louise are each resting quietly when Ramon and Diana spring upon them, shrieking with ecstatic excitement that he proposed and she said yes. Louise and Paul get together, she horrified, and he thinking it might not be so bad.
Ramon meantime is placing a lavish farm machinery order for his Andorra property, expecting Diana's money to pay for it, and planning to see a Madrid architect about renovating his house in Andorra. His enthusiasm is brimming over so much that Paul realizes that he can't hide the truth any longer.
Louise reveals that Ramon is a gigolo
So he reveals that Diana has no wealth at all. Ramon accepts the news with seriousness, then asks if Paul has told Diana that he is a gigolo. Paul assures him that he hasn't, and also promises not to tell Diana that Ramon knows about her.
Meanwhile, Diana is talking with the same excitement about seeing the architect in Madrid, to the point where Louise tells her to wipe the glow from her face, and finally brings herself to saying that Ramon is not a sheep herder, but rather a woman herder - a gigolo.
The glow has gone off both when they meet for dinner
A much more solemn Ramon and Louise meet for dinner that night, and she asks him if he's completed the farm equipment order. He says he hasn't because there is serious trouble at home.
His flock had to be destroyed after contracting a disease that could spread to other herds. He adds that it is sad news for them because he could lose everything. And he certainly couldn't get a loan to purchase the farm machinery under these circumstances. Diana says that she hopes he knows that she would help him in a minute.
Having told their lies, both are nearly in tears
Diana explains that she too has received bad news from home, that her father is going through litigation by the government who are questioning his ownership of the oil fields, and it looks likely that he will lose. She adds that her family want her to return home right away. Ramon nods understandingly. She is near tears when he says that he too should be going home at this critical time. They start to talk in platitudes, Diana saying that being a city girl, she probably couldn't live in Andorra anyway. Ramon says, “sometimes life holds cruel surprises.” Then suddenly, Diana says she doesn't want dinner, as Ramon concurs with tears in his eyes.

Ramon and Diana say goodbye
The following day, Paul is saying goodbye to Louise, about to take off on his charter to Puerto Seguara, when Ramon and Diana walk up. She introduces the two men, and for her sake, they go through a charade with Ramon saying he believes he's on the same flight as Paul.Ramon says he too may stop in Puerto Seguara, and Paul invites him to go marlin fishing with him
Then the time comes for parting, Paul and Louise with good humor, Ramon and Diana, in great seriousness, he promising to write to her when he gets to Andorra.
Ramon asks Diana to come with him
The men walk to the limousine while Louise comforts her friend, but they are no sooner seated when Diana calls after Ramon, and runs after him. Sticking her head in the door, she tells him she lied ….. then says happily that she'd love to live in Andorra, and wasn't really a city girl. Ramon looks pleased, then says that he doesn't have ten thousand acres. For every defect in his life, she comes up with an answer countering it (such as she'd wash her hair in the rain which came through the leaking roof of his house). Then he asks her to come with him, and in joy of a mutual decision, they embrace across Paul who says he won't be leaving after all.
The two schemers leave the resort together
He gets out of the car to make the seat free for her. Diana quickly runs back to hug Louise and give her the necklace before rejoining Ramon. “What about your clothes?” he asks, and she says she's given them to Louise. Paul and Ramon exchange formal regrets about not being able to make the fishing trip together, but hope for another time.
Louise is fingering the necklace as Paul walks back to her. Though she may be thinking of taking over the strategy for catching an eligible bachelor, he has other plans for her.
