Andy pursues Paul everywhereto get him to help
The Plot
Paul is relaxing in the sun when approached by an old friend, multi-millionaire businessman Andy Dawson with a romantic tale about an Andorran woman he loved when a student at the Sorbonne in Paris. He says that Maria Alonzo was the only woman he ever loved, and recently tried to locate her, but his investigators discovered no more than a grave in Barcelona.
But they also found out that Maria had a daughter whom Andy believes would be his, and he wants Paul to locate her.
Paul sends telegrams to Ramon "everywhere"
However, Paul wants to go skiing in Zermatt, and Andy finds it impossible to persuade the one-and-only man he believes suitable for the mission.
But he finally breaks him down, and Paul sends telegrams to all the best hotels in Europe in hopes of locating his pal, Andorran Ramon de Vega, to help him.
Paul then takes off for Barcelona to await the possible arrival of Ramon as indicated in the telegram.
The dear friends greet one another warmly
Paul has barely arrived in Barcelona himself, when returning to his room he finds Ramon inside. After a warm greeting, Paul asks him whether he climbed the ivy or jimmied the lock to get inside, but Ramon says that he only kissed the chambermaid. Paul explains that they're looking for Andy's possible daughter in Andorra, and when they bring her to Barcelona, they'll split the generous reward. But first, Paul completes his planned skiing trip to Zermatt. There, he queries Ramon about the Alonzo family, and learns that they're one of the richest families in Andorra.
Paul asks Alonzo about Maria's daughter
When Paul asks if their wealth is in land, Ramon tells him they're smugglers. From Switzerland, they head for Andorra, and while Ramon advises subtlety, Paul is direct with Eduardo Alonzo, and asks him whether Maria had a daughter, and if so, where the girl might be.
But Paul will reveal nothing about why he wants to see the daughter, so Alonzo says that he's entitled to know no more than he would find out in the street - that Maria did have a daughter whom Eduardo Alonzo raised, but who is now living with the Romero family.
They watch Alonzos and Romeros fight it out
He refuses to tell them any more, and when they've left, Ramon explains that the Romero family are the Alonzo's arch rivals, and the Rockefellers of Andorran smuggling. When Paul asks how they'd be able to get in contact with the Romeros, Ramon advises him to just wait.
And indeed two henchmen for the family arrive within a day. They take Paul and Ramon into the street, but are immediately confronted, and fight by a bunch from the Alonzo family, leaving Paul and Ramon to watch. Meantime, a limousine drives up to take Paul to the Romero home.
Ignacio Romero says Suzanne doesn't need money
In the car Lorenzo Romero tells Paul that the fight occurred because the Alonzos did not want the Romeros to take Paul to see Ignacio Romero. Paul tells the head of the Romero family that he wants to see Maria Alonzo's daughter about a legal matter that involves her coming into a considerable sum of money. Ignatio says that no one in his household lacks for money. He won't give Paul access to Suzanne, and sends him away. But Suzanne has overheard the conversation, and manages to whisper to Paul just before the limousine drives up to take him back to town.
Sucanne shows interest in Andy's company
She asks if it's true about the money, and seeing the car approach, Paul asks where they could meet. Suzanne says the only place is the church on Sunday. There, Suzanne manages to escape the Romeros by saying that she wants to arrange a Mass for her mother, and slips into a side room where Paul is waiting. He asks who her father was, but she says that there were many men in her mother's life. When he presses her for her real father's name, she implies never really having interest, and her mother not saying. Paul then tried the name Andrew Dawson, and it means nothing to her.
Suzanne suddenly recalls her mother speaking of Andy
But when he mentions Andy's company, it is immediately familiar to her as one whose typewriters she's often smuggled, and Suzanne suddenly changes her story, saying that her mother mentioned Andy on many occasions as being her real father.
Paul is a little sceptical as Maria asks about Andy's money, and whether he might die soon, but Suzanne says that every girl wants a father, and rich ones are even better. Completely charmed by her, Paul says they'll let Andy meet her and decide for himself whether Suzanne is his daughter.
Suzanne says it's exciting to meet the famous Ramon
The two of them slip out into the road at the side of the church where a largefarm truck drives up. It's Ramon, who spirits them away.
When Paul introduces him, Suzanne is thrilled to meet Ramon, having heard so much about him. “You're a legend in my country,” she tells him, “mothers tell stories of you to their children to frighten them.”
Ramon drives them to his home, and gets Paul to take Suzanne into the house so that his shepherd, who will load the truck, won't see her.
Ramon and Paul help Suzanne into the truck
Meanwhile, the Romeros and Alonzos have noted Suzanne's disappearance, and race out of the church. Paul points out grass growing from the floor of Ramon's house, figuring that's why Diana didn't stay with him, and when the truck is loaded with sheep, the three of them go in through the back of the truck to a cab behind the driver. The shepherd drives off with his load of sheep et al, and eventually, the Alonzos and Romeros, both looking for Suzanne, come up to the truck, but according to Ramon's plan, each passes them by as no more than a load of sheep.
Paul and Suzanne help Ramon to the truck
They begin to fall asleep for the long journey to Barcelona, but then, Ramon notices that the road surface changes from smooth to rutty, and draws the conclusion that the driver has figured out what they're up to, and is taking them somewhere else, probably to sell them to the highest bidder.
He's able to make an engine adjustment which causes the vehicle to stop, then jumps the driver when he alights. But the shepherd took his gun when he got out of the cab, and in the subsequent struggle, the driver is killed and Ramon is shot in the arm
Once in Barcelona, they take a suite at a luxury hotel, and summon Andy from Tokyo while Ramon recuperates from his injury. Suzanne goes to him, and attempts to bribe him to speak on her behalf to Paul, to get him to convince Andy that she's his daughter. After trying threats and a romantic approach without success, Suzanne throws a glass at the door in annoyance, just before Paul walks through it.
Paul goes out on the balcony with her, and they see Alonzos and Romeros below, both families alerted by the hotel clerk who sent the telegram to Andy for him.
To get out of the hotel Paul will pretend to be a movie star
As time passes, and Andy doesn't arrive, the impending threat of the two families starts to worry both Suzanne and Ramon who is getting tired of being cooped up in the hotel room.
Watching the men in the street below, eventually, Paul too feels that they need to take action, and he gets Ramon to arrange a police escort for the Hollywood movie star Paul Bryan to take him to the American consulate from the service entrance of the hotel to avoid the mobs of fans.
Suzanne doesn't like the idea of being a maid
At the consulate Paul tries to persuade the official to give Suzanne a visa. Hearing about the feud between the two families, Slocum objects on the basis that he'd be importing a vendetta to America. Paul then tries the tack of hiring Suzanne as his maid to get her a visa, but she doesn't like the sound of that, and is triumphant when Slocum turns that down too. Paul then says that Andrew Dawson would be very unhappy if the entry of his long-lost daughter into the US was being impeded, and since Slocum had been objecting on the basis of principle, not law, it was he personally who would be responsible for upsetting the powerful Andrew Dawson.
Just as they spot the families, Andy arrives
Visa obtained and still having the police escort, the three get to the airport just minutes before the Alonzos and Romeros. After quickly obtaining tickets on an impending flight to the US, Ramon, Paul and Suzanne run straight into both families.
Suzanne says they will do nothing as long as both are there, but might kill Ramon when she and Paul are gone.
At that moment, Andy walks up, having just arrived from Tokyo, delighted that Paul has come to meet him, surprised that he knew the flight.
Suzanne tenderly holds the photo of Andy's mother
Then he spots Suzanne, and breaks out in a wide grin of recognition.
He extends his arm, calling for a picture, and an aide places a photo in his hand.
It's a photo of his mother, and he sees an immediate resemblance, and lifts Suzanne in the air.
The pair are filled with happiness, and watching on, Paul asks what's the first thing Ramon's going to do with his $15,000. “Mow my living room,” he answers.
Andy introduces Suzanne to his new wife
Andy introduces Suzanne to a svelte blonde with him, saying she's the new wife he married in Tokyo. The girls greet one another pleasantly, and, then suddenly, Andy notices the assembled crowd of Alonzos and Romeros looking on the scene crossly.
“Who are those men?” he asks, and Paul shouts that they're relatives, to which Andy goes rushing towards the families with warm abandon.
They are at first angry, but then Andy shows Eduardo Alonzo the photo of his mother
Eduardo looks at the photo of Andy's mother
Eduardo studies it critically, then breaks into a smile, and congratulates Andy that Suzanne is his daughter.
Everyone cheers, and for a split second Eduardo Alonzo and Ignacio Romero smile at each other before realizing what they've done, and revert to a menacing stare.
Andy goes back to the women, and takes them away, offering to buy each a new wardrobe in New York, and promising to see Paul back at the hotel with his check book.
Ramon and Paul decide to go to the Riviera
Ramon and Paul go for a drink to discuss their plans.
Paul says that with all the money, he's getting, he's decided to stay in Europe for a while.
Ramon tells him that he too has come into money, and is thinking of going to the Riviera, and needs a guide to help him understand the wonderfully rich American widows.
“How can I serve you, Senor de Vega?” Paul replies.
